The watch has been cleaned and serviced and is in good working order and runs the full length of its chain. However please do not expect quartz accuracy from a 300 year old watch.
This is a typical French “Oignon” watch and was made circa 1700 – 1710
Movement – the large gilt, deep full plate verge movement has large Egyptian pillars and a large round pierced watch cock. The cock is decorated with intricate pierced work and a Cockerel. The movement also has some beautiful detailing on the movement with gilt finials and finely turned screws.
The movement is signed “Jean Merlier a Paris” and is in 90% mint condition – a few tiny mark only
Case – the movement comes in a massive gilt metal open face case, which has a hinged bezel and the movement swings out from the front. The case is covered with leather which I am sure is not original but was done in the 1800’s. The leather is old and dark brown – some of the images show it to be a more red colour but this is due to the flash.
The case has string hinges and its original bow and stem. The case is in90% mint condition – minor wear only, overall very clean
Dial – the white enamel dial has large striking blue enamel numbers. The dial is in 85% mint condition – there are some fine hairlines and the minute hand has been replaced
The watch measures 60mm wide x 37mm deep – this is a BIG watch.
