This is an English silver pair cased verge with clear hallmarks for London 1789
The watch has been cleaned and serviced and when it works it keeps excellent time. However the watch has a tendency to stop after anywhere from 1 hour to 5 hours. Then you need to wind it up again and it works a treat. Sometimes it will run the full length of the chain but around 1 in 5 times it will stop half way through.
Movement the gilt full plate verge movement has square baluster pillars and a pierced watch cock with two feet. The movement is further decorated with fancy pierced work and a silver regulator disc.
The movement is signed Tarts, London, 1168.
The movement is in 80% mint condition there are scratches on the signature
Inner case the movement comes in a silver inner case, which has a hinged bezel and the movement is wound from the back, set from the front and swings out from the front.
The case has a smooth plain finish and has a good example of an early bow and stem
The case is in 75% mint condition the usual groove from the outer and the usual common repair inside the case around the stem. Also a few small dings and bruises
Outer case the original silver outer case is decorated with a superb scene in high relief of a soldier and his horse talking to an older, bearded gentleman. The case is a particularly good example with the only wear on the high points two faces
The rest of the case is decorated with raised flowers and swags and swirls
The case has a large hinge also
The case is in 90% mint condition exceptionally clean with just minor wear and also the top of the button is missing
Dial the white enamel dial has arcaded five minute numbers and gilt filigree hands. The dial is in 80% mint condition there is a hairline running from the 12 to the 9 and also some little nibble marks along the very edge of the dial
The watch has a bulls eye mineral glass.
