2.25 Silver Champleve Dial Verge by WINDMILLS. With Calendar. Pair Case / Open Face. 57mm. Key Wound / Key Set Circa 1710

This large silver pair cased verge was made by the esteemed watch maker Joseph Windmills circa 1700 – 1710 The watch has large silver cases but are PRE Hallmark. The inner does have makers for TIB. The outer case probably has the same marks but is hidden by the case spring. The case is 100% original and matching however The watch has been cleaned and serviced HOWEVER this watch gains around 15 minutes an hour and so is sold “as is” Movement – the large gilt full plate verge movement has large Egyptian pillars with particularly nice detailing on the tops of the coloums The movement also has a large pierced watch cock which is winged and has a massive D shaped foot decorated with pierced work. The main part of the cock is also decorated with pierced work and features mythological birds and a grotesque face on the base. The movement is also decorated with applied pierced work and has a silver regulator disc. The movement is signed “Windmil, London” The movement is in 85% mint condition – the plate spring near the signature has quite a few scratches around it

Inner case – the large silver inner case has a hinged bezel and where the movement swings out from the front. The movement is wound from the back and set from the front The case has a smooth plain finish and is in 85% mint condition – some small bruises and general wear and tear and the stem has been repaired inside the case at some point, which is normal Outer case – the large silver and original outer case has a large box hinge and its original button. The bezel of the watch has a sloping inwards rim, which frames the dial particularly well. The case has a smooth plain finish and is in 80% mint condition – there are little bruises all around the bezel

Dial – the champlevé dial is a particularly good example. The dial has a sunken centre, which is signed “Windmill” in black enamel on a cartouche Below it is a square aperture, which partially reveals a gilt revolving disc, which is the calendar function. This changes every 24 hours To either side of this is the word LO then DON. Above it is a raised cherub face The dial has black enamel numbers and individual silver cartouches with black enamel 5 minute marks The dial has a brushed silver finish and very good steel beetle and poker hands. The dial is in 95% mint condition – very, very clean.
