This is an early Dutch Chatelaine which has early Dutch hallmarks and was made circa 1750.
The chatelaine starts at the top with a simple but substantial silver mount and suspension loop. This supports a series of chains – on the outside there is a length of silver curb links. In the middle there is a length of tubular links, which form a sort of ladder shape. Each of these tubes is decorated with raised silver detailing and each are held to the one above or below by simple silver wire.
These three lengths of chains terminate at a silver panel, which is decorated with a cut out / pierced design. In the centre there is a circle with a naïve horse. This is flanked by tow lion ramparts – again naïve with not much detailing on the faces etc.
Below this panel are two hinges, one which supports three tubular links with a silver seal hanging from this. The seal is quite substantial and is decorated with a body of silver loops and strut work. The base has milled sides but no intaglio.
Hanging from the other hinge are more tubular links and hanging from the end are two silver bells.
At the far end is a suspension loop with a curb link chain. Hanging from the end is an early silver key with a pierced design in the centre and a surround of silver balls.
The chatelaine measures 24cm long from the top to the end tip of the key and measures 5cm long at its widest point. The chatelaine has minor wear and is generally in excellent condition.
