This is an American pocket Railroad grade pocket watch made by the Waltham Watch Co and sent to England where it was cased and sold. It was then used as a HS3 deck watch by the Navy.

Movement – this is a top quality nickel bridge movement with a lever escapement and a micrometer regulator. The movement has raised gold jewel settings, gold train wheels, a gold capped lever and a diamond endstone. The movement is decorated with damascening and is signed “Vanguard, Waltham, Mass, USA, 23 Jewels, Adjusted” # 26223723. The movement is in 90% mint condition – please note that the serial number on this watch does not correspond with a 23J Vanguard in the Waltham serial database. This might suggest that part of the top plate was replaced but as the damascening aligns perfectly to the rest, I cannot see how this could be the case. Perhaps this was done at the Waltham factory knowing that the watch was to see military service. Or, Waltham made a mistake on when stamping the serial number which is unlikely.

Case – the movement comes in an English white metal open face case by Dennison which has a screw on back and bezel. The case is engraved with a government issue broad arrow and HS3. The rest of the case has a smooth plain finish and is in 90% condition – an excellent example of a military case

Dial – the white enamel dial has a full set of blue steel hands and is signed “Waltham, USA, Vanguard 23 Jewels, 8614”. The dial is in 99% mint condition – light loss to the lettering

The watch measures 50mm wide x 14mm deep

The watch is stem wound / lever set at the 55 position

The watch has a bevelled mineral glass
