This is an English pocket watch made by Rotherhams for the British government, who evaluated the watch and gave it the designation “General Service Mark II”
Rotherhams were making watches for the British government throughout World War 1 and I would say that this watch was produced around that time but only bought into service at a later date.
This is a lovely example having an English movement rather than an American or Swiss movement and has a particularly attractive dial
Movement – the good quality gilt full plate movement has a lever escapement with 15 Jewels. The movement is signed “Rotherhams, London, 219919 and is in 95% mint condition
Case – the movement comes in a large metal case by Dennison which has a screw off back and bezel. The case is engraved on the edge A 121. The back is engraved “A. 121, GSMk II” and is also engraved with a broad arrow British government mark. The case has a smooth plain finish and is in 95% mint condition – light wear
Dial – the black enamel dial has old luminous hands and numbers – long lost their luminosity. The dial is signed in gold enamel “Rotherhams, London A121” and is in 99% mint condition
The watch has a thick bevelled bulls eye glass
The watch measures 58mm x 26mm
The watch is stem wound / pin set
