This is seal was designed to be used with hot wax for sealing letters.
I have made an impression of this seal using hot wax to show that the seal works as intended and also to give a clearer image of the intaglio.
The wax impression comes in a small plastic case and is included with the seal.
This is a gilt metal seal made circa 1790
The base is set with a green bloodstone engraved with an intaglio showing Cupid with two birds in a cage. Around the scene are the words “J’Attrape Sage et Fou”
I catch the wise and the foolish i.e. we can all be caught by loves “snare”
The stone is held in a claw mount
The seal has a carved base and shank with suspension loop
The seal measures 21mm x 15mm x 13mm and is in 95% mint condition
