Beautiful 18K gold verge with enamel en grisaille By Gide, Paris c1790

This is an exquisite gold verge made circa 1780 – 1790

The case is decorated with a technique called enamel en grisaille. This is where only hues of grey are used to create the image usually of sculpture

Movement – the gilt full plate verge movement has a pierced watch cock and a silver regulator disc. The movement is signed “Gide a Paris” and is in 95% mint condition

Case – the movement comes in a solid 18K gold open face case, which has a hinged bezel and the watch is wound and set from the front and swings out from the front also. The back of the case is decorated with an enamel scene en grisaille of a mother taking her daughter to the statue of eros. The daughter is handing the god a dove votive and the smiling god in return is handing her a garland for her hair. The enamel is set against a translucent pink enamel background and the effect is most beautiful. The case is then decorated with gold balls around the edge with a blue enamel border. The case is in 90% mint condition – the enamel on the back is perfect with just light surface scratches; the enamel border has losses with repairs on three of the balls, which is reflected in the price

Dial – the white enamel dial has a beautiful pair of gilt hands and the dial is signed “Gide a Paris”. The dial is in 100% mint condition

The watch measures 38mm wide x 14mm deep
