This is an early Georgian cut steel chain which measures 280mm in length from the unusual tapered T bar to the dog clip. The chain is made up of a series of oval links decorated with internal wavy wire work. These links are interspersed with a row of 3 by 2 curb links. Hanging from the T bar is an additional length of chain from which hangs a steel seal. This has a strut handle with suspension loop and an oval base decorated with the family crest of the Cobb family. This has a shield with two ducks and a fish, topped by an elephant. I can only presume the engraver had never seen an elephant before and went with the description he was given. The seal has a latin motto for Stemmata Agendo. Behaving virtuously. The seal measures 29mm x 24mm x 21mm and is in 95% mint condition
