This pocket watch has an English key wound movement and comes in an English silver case with hallmarks for Chester 1897
We do not normally recommend key wound watches to those considering buying their first pocket watch but if you really wanted a key wound pocket watch this would be a suitable choice. The movement features a spring set up known as a going barrel and these are quite robust unlike the fragile earlier FUSEE pocket watches. These key wound watches are still fiddly to use but do come with full winding and setting instructions and can be a lot of fun.
Movement – the gilt full plate going barrel lever has a compensated balance and is stamped “Reversing Pinion” and also “No. 289714”. The movement is in 95% mint condition. The movement comes with its original gilt dust cap.
Case - the movement comes in an English silver open face case, which has a hinged back cover which pops open when you press the button in on the stem. The watch is wound from the back, is set from the front and the movement is accessed from the front also. The case is decorated with coin edged sides, engine turning and a vacant crest on the back. The case is in 95% mint condition
Dial – the white enamel dial has a gilt pair of hands and a blue steel sub seconds hand. The dial is signed “The Express English Lever, J G Graves, Sheffield”. The dial is in 90% mint condition – a small chip on the very edge of the dial at the 1 and very faint hairlines on the sub seconds dial and on the 9.
