This is an American made pocket watch made by the Waltham Watch Co. The case has an inscription on the inner cover which reads:
“Presented to Clr Sergt R. Boyd By the R.M.A S.M.M.Det, May 18th 1898, Victoria, BC”
Movement – the gilt full plate lever movement has 17 Jewels and with a micrometer regulator. It is signed “American Waltham Watch Co, 17Jewels, Adjusted” # 5086520and is in 95% mint condition.
Case – the movement comes in a sterling silver case, which has a screw off back and bezel. The back cover has an initialled circle with initials RB and the inside of the case is engraved with the inscription above. The case has engine turning, coin edged sides and is in 90% mint condition – slight wear and the bow has been replaced with a gilt example
Dial – the white enamel dial has a pair of fancy blue filigree hands. The dial is double sunk with a 24 hour chapter ring The dial is signed “American Waltham”. The dial is in 95% mint condition – light tiny marks only

The watch measures 52mm wide x 20mm deep – 18 size
Robert Boyd, was a member of the Royal Marines Artillery stationed in British Columbia. This watch appears to have been presented before his return to England. He was then sent to South Africa and received the Queen's South African medal with 5 clasps. Paardeberg, Driefontein. Johannesberg, Diamond Hill, Belfast and Cape Colony.
