This is a Swiss watch made circa 1890

Back in the late Victorian period, most who could afford do so had a pocket watch and as the output of pocket watches increased due to mass production, watches became even more affordable. in an effort to encourage customers to have more than one watch, many Swiss watches were made with an additional function – calendars, chronographs, repeaters, world time etc etc. Then there watches with even more unusual function, such as this watch.

 

Movement – the gilt bridge movement has a cylinder escapement and is in 95% mint condition

Positioned on top of the movement is the gilt cage for the barometer function. This numbered 4237 and stamped PF. This is in excellent working condition

Case – the movement comes in a gunmetal open face case, which has a hinged back and a snap on bezel. The inside of the case is stamped “Acier Garanti, PF, Oxidage inalterable”

The outside of the case has a smooth plain finish and is in 95% mint condition – small marks only

Dial – the white enamel dial has a pair of gilt hands and a blue steel pointer for the barometer function along with silvered outer chapter rings for this function.

The dial is signed “Montre Barometre, SGDG” and is in 100% mint condition

The watch has a bevelled mineral glass

The watch measures 55mm wide x 21mm deep

The watch is stem wound / pin set
