This Swiss pocket watch was made by Longines circa 1901. The case was made by Holy Freres, one of the best case makers of this period. His watches normally have a signature and this is no exception. The cases were made in very low numbers and usually to commemorate an occasion. As this is for PAX or Peace, it would have been to signify the need for peace or the end of a conflict at that time, possibly the Thousand Day War in South America or the Boer War in South Africa.
Movement – the gilt ¾ plate movement has a lever escapement and is signed “Longines, 1318630”. The movement is in 95% mint condition
Case – the movement comes in a white metal open face case, which has a snap on back and bezel. The case is decorated with a high quality scene in high relief of female angel sitting on a broken cannon with discarded weapons at her feet. Beside her is an empty basket of food. She reaches out to the sun with a laurel wreath in her hand and the word Pax. By her feet is the signature for Holy Freres. The rest of the case is decorated with wreaths and leaves in high relief and the case also has a carved bow. The case is in 95% mint condition
