Rare Calendar Moonphase Chronograph pocket watch. S Smith, London c1890
This is a Swiss pocket watch retailed by the esteemed company S Smith and Son circa 1890
The very rare feature of the watch is the double complication – a calendar Moonphase AND a chronograph function.
Movement – the gilt ¾ plate movement has a lever escapement and exposed steel work for the start, stop and fly back and reset chronograph function. The movement is in 99% mint condition – superb condition
Case – the movement comes in a silver gilt case, which is deeper than usual to accommodate the chronograph work on the back and the calendar function on the dial.
The case has a rich gold colour inside and out and has a smooth plain finish. The case is in 95% mint condition – some tiny marks only
Dial – the white enamel dial has a superb set of gold colure hour and minute hands and the chronograph hand is particularly fine with milled detailing on the circular tail. The dial has 4 subsidiary dials. The one under the 12 is for the chronograph and this is a minute register; this resets back to 0 when you reset the chronograph. On the 9 and 3 are date and day dials. These change very 24 hours or can be manually set by the pins on the side of the dial. Above the 6 is the subsidiary seconds and moonphase dial. This changes every 48 hours or can be set manually by a pin on the side of the case. The dial is signed “S Smith & Sons, 9 Strand London, N M, 133 A Swiss Made” and is in 100% mint condition
The watch has a mineral glass
The watch measures 51mm wide x 20mm deep
The watch is stem wound / pin set
