This is possibly one of the largest gold watches which we have had the pleasure in selling. The massive gold case weighs in total 186g. The watch measures 57mm wide x 18mm and is much bigger and heavier than you would expect for a watch of this type
This top quality watch was made by one of the finest makers Charles Frodsham and has clear hallmarks for London 1889
Movement – the gilt ¾ plate movement has a lever escapement with a free sprung helical hairspring and a chronometer adjusted balance. The movement has a raised mainspring cover and is signed “By Appointment to the Queen, Chas Frodsham, 84 Strand, London, No 07736 AD. Fmsz” and with the two badges for Royal appointments on the mainspring barrel. The movement has a patent hand setting device and winding device where the watch can only be wound and set with the front cover open. This disengages when the cover is closed. The movement is in 95% mint condition
Case – the watch comes in a massive 18K gold hunter case, which has a hinged inner, back and front cover. The front cover pops open crisply to 90 degrees when you press he winder in. The case has a smooth plain finish and is in 95% mint condition
Dial – the slightly off white enamel dial – a look and finish favoured by Frodsham – has a wind indicator function under the 12. The watch has a full set of blue steel hands including a sweep cente seconds hand. The dial is signed “Chas Frodsham, 07736, AD.Fmsz” and is in 100% mint condition
The watch comes in a period fitted box.
